A cover letter is one of the most important documents of your career. People do not have enough time to go through the entire cover letter and especially if it is too long. So, keep it short and include all the important details in your cover letter. Make sure it is as good as any other important document.

1. Grab the reader from the beginning Do not start the cover letter from the word “I”. In spite of writing “I am writing in reply to your advertisement for a project manager”, try and write “My knowledge in managing the work plan, agenda and finances”.

2. Be brief and to the point Most of the time a covering letter for a job application only has to affirm that you are relating for a position and that application and other important materials an enclosed.

3. Use a word processor Write a cover letter on the computer using Microsoft word document. Remember that you don’t have to hand write the cover letter.

4. Avoid fancy fonts and colors You are not writing an informal document so use a business font such as Arial. It should look absolutely professional and also avoid using any types of colors.

5. Keep it short and brief The format should be perfectly centered and should not exceed one page in length. Do not fold the cover letter otherwise it would not be accepted.

6. Be an attention getter Grab the attention of the reader from the very beginning so that they read the full cover letter. So, make sure you begin well.

7. Address your letter personally Do not give a general greeting or address it to an arbitrary or general title. This is one of the main mistakes that people commit.

8. Make no mistakes about it A cover letter should be absolutely perfect otherwise it is possible that it is never read only.
