Electrician Apprentices - Getting Started
April 1st, 2008
Most companies set working experience as a requirement for their electrician positions. As such, if you are a fresh graduate school, you may find yourself in a bit of trouble. Not to worry though, because apprenticeship programs have actually been setup to address this particular concern.
Before applying for an apprenticeship, you have to start with a good education. To avoid the trap of graduating from an electrician school only to end up becoming under-qualified for most of the electrician positions available, you must pick the right electrician school to go to from the beginning. You have the option of training from an online course, go to a government-sponsored school, or undergo a military training program.
Once you’ve chosen your school to have your electrician training, you’ll need to pick a specialization. Even if you have no idea what to pick, you’ll eventually find out the best specialization for you once you go through your classes. If your school doesn’t have the specialization that best suits you, you can always go to other schools once you get your certificate; that’s because further training is more of a boon to you than a detriment.
Before looking for a job, it is important that you find a place where you can work as an apprentice. You must choose a place that is related to your specialization. It is important to undergo apprenticeship because it will familiarize you with the duties and habits of a good electrician.
The duties of an electrician basically depends on what type of electrician you are. Most electricians are in charge of the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical devices and equipment. Familiarization and knowledge in operating most common electrician tools is also of the utmost importance.
It’s not very difficult to find a place to have your apprenticeship training; it’s not exactly an unavailable position to fill. The Internet, the yellow pages, advertisements, the classified ads are just a few sources where you can find listings of companies and organizations looking for electrician apprentices. The best thing about an apprenticeship is that the company that took you in as an apprentice will usually be the company that will hire you once you’ve gained enough experience to work as a full-time electrician. Just do your best, and let your performance speak for itself.
