A Singapore resident has an option to get Singapore foreign domestic workers. Do take note though that this is a serious decision on your part. You need to be sure that you are comfortable with and capable of handling someone who is not too familiar with Singapore’s culture and rules. The fastest and safest way to get a foreign worker is through a reputable agency. A good agency will take care of almost everything so that you only have to worry about signing papers and paying the fees. Agencies too can help you find perfect matches based on your preferences and the qualifications of available workers. Moreover, many agencies offer the additional service of worker replacement in case something goes wrong or in case you are not happy with the worker that you have.
Obtaining Your Own Worker
You may prefer a direct hands-on approach to getting your domestic worker. If this is the case, you can hire a domestic worker from outside or arrange for a transfer if there are workers in Singapore that are eligible for transfers. Here are the general requirements that you need to take note of:
- It is a must for employers to undergo an orientation program before getting Singapore foreign domestic workers. You don’t need to worry if your work schedule is tight. You can take an online program.
- Work permits are applied for by employers. A normal worker’s permit will be valid for 24 months. You may however need to check your worker’s passport to ensure that she will be allowed to stay for that length of time.
- Getting domestic help is not very cheap. Employers would have to pay an administrative fee and a levy that is charged monthly with penalties for late payment. An employer’s budget should also cover twice a year check-ups for workers, monthly salary, 13th month bonus, food, lodging, insurance, bonds and air fare.
- Domestic workers have to undergo a test and be present for a safety seminar.
These requirements are not the only things to think about. Potential employers also need to be concerned over the following facts:
- Foreigners staying in Singapore temporarily may not employ domestic workers. Only residents and citizens of Singapore may do so.
- It is not permissible for foreign domestic workers to get pregnant within their length of stay. The burden of making sure that pregnancies do not happen is placed on the shoulders of employers.
- Residents will usually require only one worker. If more is needed, an approval should be secured.
- Workers must be between 23-50 years old and should have a minimum of 8 years of formal education.
- Domestic workers are not allowed to perform tasks not related to domestic work.
- Employers should educate domestic workers on how to live and act in Singapore.
