It can be difficult to figure out a business name because there are so many options out there for you to choose from when trying to find something that will represent your company well. We want to make sure that before you make that decision you take into consideration some of the hurdles you might have to deal with in order to make the right decision.

When make a decision on your company name and how you want to brand you have to realize that more than like you are going to have some changes in your business and what it looks like today will not be the case in probably a decade from now. As you learn you will make so many more changes with your philosophy, direction of your business, products you may have, or services that you are offering.

With this as a strong possibility you need to consider that the name you decide on should be arbitrary enough that it can mean a lot of positive ideas, but at the same time doesn’t trap you in. I suggest that you do this by looking at other successful companies like Amazon, eBay, or Google that have created names not centered around a product, but have established a solid brand to follow.

The first place to start with a name is thinking of what type of story would go along with this company name to describe exactly who you are and what you want to accomplish. There are a lot of advantages to having a story because this is a way to captivate people and help with word of mouth marketing.

Stories help to give you a human feel that will keep people involved in the process that people will remember you by instead of sterile business jargon. People forget mission statements because they don’t register with us in our minds and are not passed around.

There are countless examples of companies using stories to establish who they are and what we should know about them. We see this with commercials and it goes all the way back to proverbs or parables that we remember and pass along to our children. So they have a way to stick.

The final step after you have picked out a name is to declare it legally through the government. You start by setting up an LLC and then trademarking the name if it is unique enough through the United States Trademark and Patent Office. This is in order to protect you legally in case anyone tries to steal or copy your brand.

So find a good name that fits your company with a solid story and pass it on to a trademark lawyer to see if this is something worth pursuing. It can make a huge difference for your bottom line.
