A job interview is a most important part of everyone’s life and it must be taken seriously, as it can alter your life. A successful interview for a desirable job can make your dreams come true, but if it is not taken seriously, you may lose that job and you will have to go in search of a job once more. Research has shown that a great number of today’s youth is unsure of what they should take to a job interview. Here are some suggestions as to the bare essentials you should consider:

Bring something that will keep you occupied eg you could bring a novel or a magazine, or even a joke book. This will help to reduce your tension and nervousness. Some people unnecessarily become stressed about the interview and can even become ill.

This may lead to troubles like stomach upset, headaches or backache etc. To keep a check on these problems, bring some medication or other treatments eg analgesics for pain or antacids for the stomach. Bring some chocolate or some other snack that has high sugar content and is easy to digest. Snacks such as these are a good back up if you have not eaten properly. Don?t chew gum (it does not look attractive in an interview) and don?t bring drinks such as coffee or soft drinks and avoid cigarettes (the smell!). Your mobile phone should be switched off and leave your ipod etc at home.

Have your own personal supply of tissues. If you need to stay in a hotel overnight to attend a job interview some distance from home, you should bring the necessary clothes in which you feel comfortable. Women should carry at least one extra pair of pantyhose as a safeguard against the dreaded ladder. Make sure that the shoes you bring are extremely comfortable to wear, clean and well polished. Black is preferable.

In case the company needs them, bring some extra copies of your resume. Do not forget to bring the necessary documents that you have to show during an interview. You should include in this documents such as your certificates of qualifications, achievements and/or degrees and a birth certificate or other proof of age. If you have worked for another company, include a declaration letter to this effect.

Do not neglect to bring the list of references of those people with whom you worked previously. You must also bring a briefcase to your job interview as this will bestow upon you a professional and elegant look. It is also practical as you can keep your documents safe and neatly presented within it. You should also bring some pens and a notebook to a job interview and if you have a portfolio, include that. You can also bring work samples if you feel that they will be relevant. Bring some breath freshener or mints with you to ensure that your breath is sweet as this will help to boost your confidence to speak without hesitation.
