Many parents want to return to school to study for the GED or some other degree. They sometimes worry about having enough time to be parents and students at the same time. This is a natural fear. Experts say that being successful in both categories boils down to time management. There are a few simple rules to time management that you can learn and stick to in order to get that degree and be a good parent at the same time. Millions of people have done it, and so can you! So, take a lesson from what the experts say about time management.

The first thing to do is make a written plan of when you will be in class, when you will be studying, and so on. Try your best to list each thing you will be doing from hour to hour for a typical week. Looking at the plan, maybe you will need to ask your family for help with the kids or housework. Be sure to let everyone close to you know about your new schedule. You will be surprised at how helpful people can become when they know you are trying to juggle work, school, and family at the same time.

Persistence is important too. If your plan falls apart once in a while, don’t let it get you down in the dumps. Just get back on the plan as soon as possible. Everyone gets ill occasionally or has a small emergency. That’s life! Don’t let the little things interfere with the big picture, which is about you getting your studies done.

Make a list of your priorities for each week. This might be to finish a class assignment by a certain time, or to finish a term paper. By having specific, but small, goals each week you will be more likely to follow the plan and get all your schoolwork done. Many people study for the GED while raising children and make it work, and you will be able to as well.

One important part of time management is balance. You should schedule some playtime each week. Of course, be careful not to overdo it, but remember to allow yourself some recreation so that your brain can take a rest. Your body needs rest as well, so try to get plenty of sleep each night. You will find yourself looking forward to these little recreation breaks. They will keep your mind fresh, and you will be in a better position to stay on top of your studies.
