Don’t make the mistake millions of other people constantly make on their resumes when listing their hobbies. More and more, job applications are requiring people to fill out their favorite hobbies and pastimes. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by. Differentiate yourself from the crowd.

A lot of people believe that the hobbies and interests part of your employment application isn’t that big of a deal and can be just finished with some filler responses such as: camping, sports, dancing and the like.

Never Be Boring!

Take this chance to be distinctive and write down some fascinating interests which make you stick out. These hobbies can be quite a great icebreaker for your interviewer to ask you about when you get the job interview. Consider it, if the interviewer is looking over your resume that appears similar when it comes to skills to everyone else’s but then they happen to notice that you’re a big fan of collecting vintage Roman coins, this could make you differentiate yourself from the bunch.

With that said, it’s not necessary to go crazy detailing all kinds of strange hobbies. Try and intermix intriguing sounding interests with interests which are relevant to the work you are trying to get. That isn’t to say that you should invent anything!

Always try to be particular about your hobbies. Don’t just list something like: reading. Rather, choose something like: I enjoy reading through ancient Norse mythology. Being particular and different can get you remembered. And being remembered is the first step in getting that interview.

Attempt to customize your interests for the position and possible interviewer you will be facing. For instance, should you apply for a business related position make an effort to choose a few of your interests that may exhibit particular characteristics that you may have that will assist you in a business environment.

If you believe you just do not have any hobbies that are of great interest or especially special, you’ve got two alternatives:

1. Find a method of phrasing your existing hobbies and interests in a very specific and intriguing way.

2. Better yet, go out and gain some new interesting hobbies and pastimes that will not only give you a leg up in your next resume writing session but it will enrich your life and give you interesting things to talk about in an interview setting.

So to summarize, be sure you don’t underestimate the power of the hobbies and interests section of your resume or job application. It can really give you a leg up on a vast majority of applicants.
