A sales representative represents their company, showcasing and selling products to potential customers. Different sales representatives have different jobs and job requirements, as well as different duties in their companies.

There are certain sales representatives that need to have a detailed background about the products they’re selling. For example, a pharmaceutical company’s sales representative would need to have a degree in science, medicine or pharmacy to be able to credibly sell anything. But then there are also those sales jobs that don’t require degrees like furniture and candy sellers.

The job and responsibilities of a sales person are determined by the kind of company he or she is in. It mostly depends on the line of the company and what specific kind of sales person he or she is. There are sales representatives who travel frequently and there are those who are stationed in the head office to make calls. They have different strategies to convince customers to buy their services or products.

It is an advantage for a sales person if he or she can converse with customers intelligently with the client or customer. This entails not only having knowledge of the product but of the industry as well and the good communication skill that are a trademark of every great sales person. Business and communication courses are definitely an advantage.

There are also variations on the way sales representatives are paid. Some have fixed salaries, some have salaries that are dependent on the number of items they sell. but usually sales people are given bonuses if the quotas they have are met or exceeded. The second pay structure is known as commission sales.

Sales representatives usually work much harder for the most part if they are paid on a commission basis. There are months that they just can’t seem to stop selling and there are other months where they can’t seem to sell a thing.
