Preparation for a career as a graphic designer can start at a four-year, accredited art school.

Most visual arts schools typically offer concentrations in photography, painting, illustration, sculpture or graphic design. Major universities will offer undergraduate degree programs and possibly a graduate program as well. The typical degree earned is a bachelor of arts or a bachelor in fine arts.

Most larger cities also have art schools designed for high school, middle school and elementary age kids. These schools offer formal and individualized art lessons.

Some schools feature mostly studio courses, where the student works on their craft and produces work and completes projects. Others schools will include heavy doses of theory and historical perspective study. The later curriculum would be helpful to students who see themselves teaching or working in a role where art history knowledge is important.

Most successful artists come to understand that being an artist isn’t totally about the art. A successful professional artist will also understand that they are a self-employed business person who needs to understand how to use their talent, market themselves and perform all of the menial tasks required of being in business.

Formal education and career training helps aspiring artists reach their goals and realized their artistic potential. Life and careers can be hard work and loaded with potential career-ending obstacles, but education and training and help a talented artist reach their career goals.

If you see yourself working as a graphic designer for an ad agency or in the marketing department of a large company, you will want to earn a college degree. Almost all employers will want to see some proof of your talent, but they will also need to be assured that they are dealing with someone they will be able to depend upon. And proving that you can sit through four years of college is one way to prove it to them.

The skills you learn in college, along with the friends and contacts you make, will be with you your entire career. You will depend upon your skills to land jobs and successfully complete them. And your friends and contacts will forever offer you advice, encouragement and help all during your future career.
