Legend has it that Romulus and Remus, the Roman twins, who were abandoned by the river Tiber by their mother, found solace in the care of a she-wolf that found them and raised them as she would her own cubs.

Over the years, the boys grew up peacefully, until the time when they built a city in the place of their abandonment, as instructed by the God of War, Mars. It is after completion of this city that the two brothers fought over succession of the city. Romulus won that battle and named the city after himself, Rome.

Rome developed and became the powerhouse of the growing Roman Empire. All this was made possible by the occupation of the Italian Peninsula by some northern warriors who settled on the banks of river Tiber in the 8th or 9th centuries.

Back then, Rome was ruled by a system of kingship. As per the norm of the day, cruelty was rampant with these folks. As a result, King Tarquin lost his kingship, as he was overthrown when Rome first became a republic.

This led to a switch from kingship to a senator form of rule. These senators were installed by the power of the citizens’ vote. However, citizen in this case was more than just nationality. To be a citizen, one had to be a man, at liberty from slavery and he was not supposed to be a poor man.

By around 27 B.C, the idea of having Emperors was first used with Augustus Caesar being the first emperor. There was need for emperors because right before that, military generals are the ones who ruled Rome. There were conflicts because there were many generals acting at the same time. This was not enough to centralize all the power hence the need to have an emperor.

As Rome grew closer to the Middle Ages, the Empire started to fade. This can be attributed to the growth of Christianity, which is still evident to date with Rome being the center where the pope operates.

For many years up to its reemergence, Rome maintained the tag of “capital of Europe” making it famous. There are still traces of its former glory as Rome still boasts some of the ancient architecture that once existed.
