If you’re considering your career options, one path that will give you a secure living and a variety of skills useful in most jobs is managing hotels. With this kind of career, you will gain business knowledge and people skills, and you will become familiar with organizational tasks such as catering, putting together banquet events, and general management. These organizational and practical skills will be useful throughout your life, so a hotel management career is a win-win situation.

In hotel and lodging management, there are numerous types of managing positions. The most obvious is a general manager. While a hotel chain or hotel owner may set the limits and conditions for the general manager’s authority, the responsibilities of that position can include price setting, setting standards for service, budget making and fund allocation to departments.

Resident managers are another type, and by definition they live in the hotel. Along with the luxurious lifestyle of living in a hotel, if you become a resident manager it’s your responsibility to respond to emergencies. For the most part, you can expect a typical forty hour week, but you must be prepared to be inconvenienced at odd hours occasionally.

There are also front office managers. They take care of anything related to the front desk, so making reservations, assigning rooms, and check-ins fall under their domain. They also oversee and train the staff at the front desk. Making adjustments to a customer’s bill and dealing with complaints is also part of their responsibility.

Yet another position is assistant manager. This job would require you to generally assist the resident and general managers in making sure the hotel functions smoothly on a daily basis. The areas you may be expected to take care of might include a number of the following: hiring, security, managing staff, sales and marketing, as well as accounting.

One of the high pressure but often rewarding positions is manager of convention services. It is not uncommon for hotels to host conferences, special events, and business or fan conventions. In this position, it would be your responsibility to communicate with the client company to arrange rooms and schedule conference rooms. Convention service managers are present at the event so that they can be physically available to solve any problems that may arise.

As you begin to apply for jobs in hotel management, you will find that employers are increasingly looking for candidates with experience and education in hotel management. You can find hotel and restaurant management programs in vocational and technical schools, or by way of adult education programs. It is also possible at many schools to earn a number of degrees in hotel management. Such programs include education on a number of topics including housekeeping management, computer skills pertaining to things like making reservations, billing, finance, accounting, advertising, catering and food services.

With a managing hotels career, you can acquire numerous practical skills that will make you desirable in any area. From event planning to restaurant and business management, you will acquire universally useful experience and knowledge.
